Suitability as Pets

The Red-tailed Black Cockatoo can make a most adorable companion bird; it has a delicate nature and can become truly endearing to members of a household.

The bird is easy to cater for and rarely has any health problems.

Its ability to mimic is extremely limited although it will connect with an array of vocal exchanges.

However, some cocks do become possessive, seeking constant attention from their owner.

Although the call or vocal output of a Red-tailed Black Cockatoo is generally not very loud, incessant calling whenever one of these occasionally over-extroverted individuals sights its owner will certainly detract from the pleasure of owning one.

Fortunately this is fairly uncommon within this species.

Status

The Red-tailed Black Cockatoo is common in Australian aviculture.

A captive strain of Red-tailed Black Cockatoo has evolved within aviculture.

Many breeders over the years have obtained stock from unknown locations and of uncertain origins.

Interbreeding of subspecies and of birds from different geographical regions has been occurring now for a number of generations.

These captive birds are domesticated hybrids and cannot be categorised.

They are not accepted by the purist and could never be reintroduced into the wild for whatever reason.

However, they are no less of a Red-tailed Black Cockatoo than any of the validated subspecies-all will breed with one another and all produce tertile offspring.

Aviculturists should endeavour to keep the different forms as pure as possible.

アカオクロオウムの飼い鳥としての品種は、飼育下で進化してきました。

長年に渡り多くのブリーダーたちは、未開拓の場所で出所の不明な個体を入手してきました。
