●Black-Cockatoo Project
As we all know, glossy black-cockatoo habitat has been burned all across the country. It’s a flammable habitat and it has gone up in Qld, NSW, Vic and SA. The extent of the damage is probably massive.
This video shows the heartbreaking situation on Kangaroo Island. I struggle to watch this. This is where I did my PhD field work.
Kangaroo Island is the last home of the South Australian subspecies of glossy black-cockatoo. There was about 400 birds left, before the fires.
We can only hope that the habitat has burnt patchily, that some area of she-oak has been spared. It should regenerate then, as it does like some fire. But if it’s killed all the trees in an area, the birds will have nothing left to eat. Because they don’t eat anything else.
We also don’t know what the impacts to nests might be.
If anyone knows more about the extent of the damage, please let me know.
Stay safe, friends, and thanks for your support for black-cockatoo conservation.
I’ll provide some more thoughts soon. Just trying to take stock of what’s going on out there.
