Vitamin and Mineral Supplements

Although every effort is made to feed the birds in our care a balanced diet we will still fall short of what nature provides. 

The ability of birds in the wild (in an unaltered landscape) to fulfill all their dietary requirements is something that we know too little about.

The vitamin content in the foods we supply is most probably more than sufficient but the mineral component is still not known nor fully understood despite many claims to the contrary.

Presumably these requirements also differ throughout the year and perhaps from season to season.

There are a variety of commercial vitamin and mineral additives that differ in content from one manufacturer to another.

Although this can be confusing it is advisable to use them according to the manufacturer's directions.

The addition of a liquid calcium is an important additive for black cockatoos.

Commercial Foods

One has to keep both an open mind and yet remain cynical when weighing up the advantages and disadvantages of the ever-increasing variety of commercial' bird foods now available in the marketplace.

Probably when more is known and genuine trials have been undertaken, the feeding of a manufactured diet to our captive cockatoos may well be beneficial and a vast improvement on what we know today.

All of these species either move from one food source to another in the wild or partake in the one food source that changes in nutritional value seasonally - as is the case with the Glossy Black Cockatoo which restricts itself to the casuarina.

For that reason a commercial diet may need to offer a variety of component requirements that would be appropriate for seasonal changes. 

However there have been few comprehensive studies carried out in the wild on the species featured here and nothing of note with captive species.

Manufacturers' claims that they have formulated the ultimate diet must be viewed with suspicion if not contempt unless proof of thorough research has been undertaken.

Another factor to consider is that aviculturists or pet owners may take the easy or lazy option and provide only one food item.

Even if the pellet is adequate, intelligent birds still relish a variety of items to eat and chew.

The opening, tearing, ripping and chewing of various foods, among other things, is interesting and enjoyable for us to witness and must be many more times so for the cockatoos.

Undoubtedly in the future, synthetic food types that come in a variety of shapes texture and nutritional value will be an improvement on what we feed today.

Aviculture must move forward and ultimately the reliance of bird keepers on foraging in the bush for appropriate food items can be minimised.

This applies particularly to breeders who keep these species in countries other than Australia and we may assume that many advancements will be undertaken in countries where alternatives to natural bush foods 8 must be found.

考慮すべきもう一つの要因は、ブリーダーやペットとしての飼い主は、簡単または怠惰な選択肢を取り、1つの食品しか提供しないかもしれないということです。
